Animal Crossing Pocket Camp Guide

(Above, some of the special Christmas items from Pocket Camp, Christmas 2018.   Now we are advancing towards another Christmas in 2019.

Last updated on 4 February 2019 with more Animals.

Updated on 29 August with new Animals.

Updated on 7 March with five new Animals and new Theme Amenities in the form of the Harmonious Theme.  Exotic Furniture and Cabana Furniture available, inter alia, as well as Samurai Suit!

28 February: changes in special Item Level Requirement.  It now does not require Level 15 with all Animals but can be unlocked with some as early as Level 10.

On 30 January, a new Essence in the form of the Hip Essence released with six new Animals, Bob, Stitches, Twiggy, Francine, Pietro and Merengue and two new Amenities in the form of the Mush Tent  and Patchwork Ghost Sofa.  Pietro is linked to the Balloon Furniture and Merengue to the Sweets Furniture.  Twiggy is linked to the Mush series.

This is, as far as I am aware, the first Animal Crossing game for Android and IOS. It appears to be in a fairly early stage of its development.  The beauty of these mobile games is that they can grow and improve at any point in time.  It is very sadly not available on Kindle but I do hope that will change.  Evidently it may not be available on the latest version of IOS either, but I only saw an in-game announcement about that, so no personal experience there

Even as it stands, like any Animal Crossing game, Pocket Camp is fairly addictive.  It is a free game and indeed, you probably never need to spend any real cash if you do not choose to do so.  If you do spend money, for the most part, it will be in order to add slots for crafting, selling or storage.  Lack of sufficient space is a problem for me in every game and in reality as well.

If you are new to the series, you may wonder what the purpose of it is.  Animal Crossing is all about collections.  Collecting Animal friends, collecting furniture, collecting items of clothing, and so on and so forth.  In this game, you have a campsite where you can invite Animals you have met and befriended, provided that specific conditions have been met.  You have to have reached a certain level of Friendship with the Animal in question and have crafted a number of specific furniture items and placed them at your campsite before you can make the invitation.

Apart from this, you must have space for another Animal.  Ultimately, this will require that you send an Animal away from the campsite before you can invite another.

Sending an Animal away is not as dire as it may appear.  Sent from the campsite, the Animal still will appear in the game in the locations you are able to visit.  You can invite the Animal again to the campsite when conditions are best for this.

Every Animal has an initial maximum Friendship level that can be reached.  To be able to go beyond this level, you must craft specific Amenities at your campsite.  These are linked to the 'theme' that the Animal in question prefers.

So ultimately you will be creating different groups of Animals at your campsite who will be affected positively when you manage to craft the Amenity those Animals prefer.  Send them away and craft a Tent or second Amenity in another theme after inviting the Animals who like THAT theme.  It is all rather like the old game of musical chairs.

As of 12 January, there have been a number of updates that have expanded the game.  Since I first began the game, there have been a couple of theme Events.  One of them was the Christmas Event and the second was the New Year Event.  Now we have a Safari Event in the Garden.

When you begin a new game, you will have to update the game a few times initially.  You will be given about 80 Leaf Tickets in the course of these updates with which to start your game.

The secret of success where items are concerned is balance.  Initially, I was tossing out many items basically because I needed the space for request items.  I have opted to increase both my items slots and my Market Boxes as well as obtaining more slots by increasing my levels.  I personally prefer to sell items at low prices in my Market Boxes to help other players and induce them to buy rather than keeping a few items at high prices there indefinitely.  I have no intention of paying absurdly high prices for anything so why should I expect it of others?

January:   When players have high priced rare items in their Market Boxes, they do NOT sell.  It becomes a showcase for vanity display of what they have found as no one wishes to buy these items. The best friends are those who place the most common items, especially fish and insects, in their boxes at reasonable prices.

You can purchase Tickets at any point in time and there are special offers available but you do receive them as Rewards from the game especially when your general level increases.  You can use these Tickets for a variety of purposes.  One of these is speeding production of a craft item.  I suggest you exercise patience instead.  The Tickets are better used elsewhere.

The basic principle of the game is the same as any Animal Crossing game.  Befriend Animals by speaking to them and filling their orders.

Special Animal Item Requests:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Note here that Animals sometimes request a specific uncommon Fish or Insect.  These as of now always have been either the Horned Dynastid as Insect and the Black Bass or Red Snapper as Fish. Sometimes now they will request 'any' Fish, Insect, Shell or Fruit.  You obtain the best rewards when you give them Red Snapper, Black Bass, Horned Dynastid or any Perfect Fruit.  You do not benefit by giving more expensive items in these cases.  The items I have named are the best to use.

Different areas of the Map give you different items as follows:

Lost Lure Creek:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Two Fruit Trees here, each bearing three fruit.  In my game, these are:

Peaches
Oranges

Other players may have different trees in their Lost Lure Creek area.

As well as harvesting fruit, this is the location where you can catch freshwater fish.  Move south to the river to exchange your net for a fishing rod automatically.

Common catches:

Pale Chub
Yellow Perch
Crucian Carp

Less Common:

Black Bass
Rainbow Trout: 1500 Bells

Uncommon:

Koi: 4000 Bells
Neon Tetra: 1500 Bells
Loach: 1500 Bells
Crawfish: 1000 Bells
King Salmon: 4000 Bells

Sunburst Island:
xxxxxxxxxxxxx

This is the place to catch insects and as soon as you arrive, your character automatically will be equipped with a net.  You can opt to use Honey of various kinds if you wish to catch more than one random insect in a single attempt.  I have not found the ordinary Honey that useful myself.  You basically do better if you spend time catching the insects one by one.  You will see the actual insects you can catch with your net either on trees or in the air.

Common catches:

Leaf Beetle
Monarch Butterfly
Tiger Butterfly

Less Common:

Horned Dynastid

Uncommon:

Miyama Stag; 1500 Bells
Emperor Butterfly
Jewel Beetle: 2500 Bells
Agrias Butterfly: 3000 Bells
Goliath Beetle
Cyclammatus Stag

You should have one Coconut Tree here as well that will have ripe fruit every 3 hours.

Breezy Hollow:
xxxxxxxxxxxxx

This is an area where you can shake trees for fruit.  Each tree yields three fruit every three hours and the following trees are here:  Pear, Orange, Apple, Cherry, Peach.  Once the fruit drops, you must wait three hours or use fertiliser to bring new ripe fruit to the tree.

Tip: You can shake all Trees when the fruit is ripe and simply leave the fruit on the ground if you have no space for more items.  You will not be able to harvest again until you collect the fruit from the ground.

Saltwater Shores
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This is the location for sea or saltwater fishing as well as foraging for shells and harvesting from Coconut Trees.

You can harvest 2 Coconuts from a Tree every 3 hours.  Two trees here bear Coconuts.

The shells you can find include:

Common:

Coral
Conch
Scallop

Not yet available:

Characters speak of the Hermit's Crab.

Common Catches:

Horse Mackerel
Squid
Olive Flounder

Less Common:

Red Snapper

Uncommon:

Tuna: 5000 Bells
Blowfish: 1500 Bells
Football Fish: 3000 Bells
Napoleonfish: 5000 Bells
Sea Horse: 2000 Bells
Barred Knifejaw: 4000 Bells
Surgeonfish: 1500 Bells
Clown Fish: 1500 Bells
Pearl Oyster Shell: 2000 Bells

New Rare items in July
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Crawfish: 1000 Bells
King Salmon: 4000 Bells
Cyclommatus Stag: 5000 Bells
Barred Knifejaw: 4000 Bells
Surgeonfish: 1500 Bells
Clown Fish: 1500 Bells
Pearl Oyster Shell: 2000 Bells

Shovelstrike Quarry:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This is a special area that must be unlocked each time you visit.  You either need help from five friends or 20 Tickets to visit it.  You can do both actually if you wish to potentially double your rewards.

You use a shovel to hit up to 5 rocks to find ores like Gold and Silver.  These are traded automatically for the item advertised when you enter.  The special item usually is a specific Essence but now it can be Candy Canes.

The item changes every three hours.  Where ANY item is concerned, the results are totally random.  I initially thought more Gold would give more items, but that really is not the case.  So far, I have received 26 Candy Canes where Gold predominated and 24 when Silver Ore was the major find but it appears to be random as I now have received more than 30 Candy Canes on occasion.

When the Reward is an Essence, one tends to find other minerals such as Ruby and Sapphire as well as Gold and Silver.  The Reward will be smaller than any special Reward such as the seasonal Snowflakes.

In fact, as you advance in level and make more Amenities, you may discover that what you lack most often for the advanced Levels of any Amenity may be the Essence or Essences needed.  One error I made in my first game was not to capitalise on the ability to grow and trade White Dahlias for various Essences.  I now feel the lack.

Strategy for Quarry
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Ask for Help from as many friends as possible every day.  The actual Reward being advertised at the Quarry at the time when you make the request for aid is irrelevant.  Once you have 5 or more Friends who have given aid, you can wait until the Quarry displays a Reward that you need in the form of a specific Essence or whatever.  The help will expire when a new day begins at 1.00 a.m.

You now can request help from 10 Friends at a time until you have asked all of your Friends in your List.

Market Box Strategies
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I believe it is best to offer small quantities of many different items at low prices to aid your friends.  If they do the same, you will be able to find an item requested by an Animal without trouble, even when time prohibits a search in the area where the item is found.  There are players who place only the rare items in their Market Box at the highest prices.  Perhaps they do this only to save space in their inventory...  you cannot retrieve any item placed in the Market Box, however.  Best to save the rare items for your own use or sell one or two if and when a friend actually needs one.

So far, the truly rare items have not been requested but the semi-uncommon ones such as Red Snapper, Horned Dynastid and Sea Bass are requested frequently, usually as the third and last request by any Animal on the Map.

Garden
xxxxxx

The flower seeds you can purchase from Lloyd the Gyroid if no special Garden Event is current consist of Red Tulips, Orange Tulips, Red Pansies and Yellow Pansies.   We have come to the conclusion that all chances of obtaining a rare Seed type from crossbreeding with ANY Flower always is random, but I do think you have a far better chance if you try to use a mature Rare flower for the crossbreeding base.  I keep a couple of rare mature flowers in my Garden at all times for my own crossbreeding efforts and for any friend who may need one.  My own preference is NOT to use a rare flower on any base flower.  I use only the basic flowers.

With the last update in mid-February, Animals now can request basic Flowers when they make requests for items.  It therefore is a good idea to keep a couple of each of the four basic flowers in stock!

Animals and Player Campers
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

At each ordinary area, you will usually find one Animal and one player.  Each Animal usually will give you three different requests for one or more random group of items and you will receive a Reward for each.  There is an opportunity to Chat to the Animal as well to raise Friendship a little. The Rewards are partly dependent on your level of Friendship with the Animal but are, to some extent, always random as well.  Always choose any additional option to speak to an Animal when one is highlighted in order to increase friendship and sometimes obtain another Reward.

Access the Map menu to see all areas with the Animals currently camping in each.  If an Animal has a request and you possess all the items needed to fill the order, you will see a tick by the Animal's icon.  Animals will stay in their specific locations for a total of 3 hours and then a new set of Animals will be loaded onto the Map.

Reward Crafting Items
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Materials you may receive include:

Steel
Cotton
Paper
Sparkle Stones
Essences
Friend Powder

Special Bonus Items
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The Bonus Gifts such as Candy Canes, New Year Charms or Blue or Red Dahlias are given when the events to which they are linked are active.

Special Friendship Rewards
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Every Animal has a specific list of Rewards that are given when you reach certain Friendship Levels.  The first of these usually is an item of clothing at Level 7, the second is a special piece of Furniture that you need to craft for the Animal at either Level 10 or Level 15, depending on the specific Animal and finally the Portrait of the Animal at Maximum Level 20.

New Requests from any Animal
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

New Requests at Levels 4 and 6
The item of Clothing is given at Level 7.
The request that unlocks a special item of furniture will occur now either at Level 10 or Level 15.
At Level 20, you automatically are given the Animal's portrait now.

Level Up Bonuses
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

There are two ways to level up in Friendship.  One increases YOUR Level in the game and every Friendship interaction with any Animal gives points towards the next level.

Bonus Rewards for increasing this general level are sent to your mailbox and include:

Request Tickets
Bells
Leaf Tickets

For example, when I increased from 24 to 25, I received: 1 Request Ticket, 1000 Bells, 10 Leaf Tickets.

Unlocking New Furniture
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

New Furniture Items are unlocked often when you unlock a new Animal.  Each Animal has a list of items that he/she requires if you wish that Animal to visit your campsite.  These often include new items that you then will be able to craft.  Items can be shared by more than one Animal.  As in any Animal Crossing game, every Animal has a specific preferred theme: Cute, Sporty, Natural, Cool, Rustic.  Secondary Themes:  Hip, Harmonious or Historical.  At any rate, these are the ones I have encountered so far.

Amenities
xxxxxxxxx

You start with a generic tent but the initial Theme you choose will give you a specific set of furniture initially.  When you reach Level 5, you will be able to craft a Tent in ANY of the Themes.   You then can increase the Tent's  Level to Level 3.  Every increase in Level will increase friendship levels with the Animals at your site.

Once you reach Level 10,  you will be able to place items in two different amenity areas.  When any Tent is at Level 3, you will unlock a new item in that theme.

For example, the theme I chose was Cute.  I was able to order a Level 1 Cute Tent from Cyrus and then increase it ultimately to Level 3.  When I had a Level 3 Tent, I unlocked the second amenity in the Cute Theme which was a Level 1 Tree Swing.  To craft the Tree Swing required 60 Wood and 20 Cute Essence.

When the second amenity's Level is increased, you may unlock a third Amenity.  In the case of the Cute theme:

Craft a Level 5 Tree Swing to unlock a Merry-Go-Round!

All of the Amenities with their requirements as well as the materials needed to craft each level are included below.

This is where the game can be a little tricky.  The first Animals you befriend will be from different themes and you will find that you can increase Friendship Levels further with the Animals that share YOUR chosen theme.  Where the other Animals are concerned, Levels will stop increasing at a fairly low level and you will see 'MAX' next to the Animal's icon where Friendship is concerned when that level is reached.

This is not a permanent situation, however.  All you need to do is craft the Level 1 Tent in the Animal's chosen theme to be able to begin to raise his/her Levels further.

For example, by crafting the Level 1 Sporty Tent, the Rewards will be: Increase Maximum Friendship Level to 10 with Animals who like Sporty and Friendship Level increased by 5.  To craft the Level 1 Sporty Tent, you need 30 Cotton and 10 Sporty Essence.

The second Amenity for the Sporty Theme is a Half-Pipe.

By crafting a Level 1 Cool Tent, you will achieve similar rewards for the Animals who like the Cool Theme.  The second Amenity in the Cool Theme is a Street Set.

By crafting a level 1 Natural Tent, you will achieve these Rewards for Animals who prefer Natural.  The second Amenity in the Natural Theme is a Picnic Set.

Again, see the section on Amenities for more details.

Hosting Animals
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Your ability to host a new Animal is based on specific requirements.  First is a specific Level of Friendship with that Animal.  Second is a list of furniture items that you not only need to own but need to place at your campsite before the Animal actually can visit.  As soon as the Animal arrives, however, you can remove the items from the site.

You do NOT need space at your campsite to bring an Animal there for the first time.  If you wish to keep the Animal there after the little introduction event that unlocks the Animal for visits, you need space for another animal.

Marketplace
xxxxxxxxxx

Merchants known to veteran Animal Crossing players will appear randomly here to sell their wares.  Usually each has three items to display and sell.  The Able Sisters sell items of clothing, shoes are sold by Kicks and random items of furniture are offered by Nook's nephews.  You can sell items to them as well.

Terrain Change
xxxxxxxxxxxxx

A recent update includes the ability to change the terrain outside your Campsite as well as the basic floor of your Campsite.  Now, when you tap on the grid to change anything at the campsite, you will see a tree icon in the background that offers the option to change the landscape, floor, sky and other portions of the landscape.  Below are a few of these with their prices.  There are other, newer landscape options that have higher costs in Leaf Tickets.  The game in fact is becoming increasingly expensive.

Middle Ground:

Flower Bed: 150 Leaf Tickets
Holiday Lights: 150 Leaf Tickets
Bamboo: 20,000 Coins

Foreground:

Flower Bed: 150 Leaf Tickets
Holiday Lights: 150 Leaf Tickets
Bamboo: 20,000 Coins

Wooden Deck:

Light Brown Deck: 200 Wood
Dark Brown Deck: 200 Wood
Blue Deck: 200 Wood ?

Christmas
xxxxxxxx

On 30 November, Christmas items became available.  There are special Santa outfit items as well as Jingle furniture items.

To obtain the outfit items, you need to complete timed goals.  The furniture items must be crafted.

Furniture items include:

Big Festive Cake: 100 Bells, 20 Candy Canes
Mountain of Presents: 100 Bells, 20 Candy Canes
Jingle checked Sofa: 100 Bells, 20 Candy Canes
Jingle Checked Bed: 300 Bells, 50 Candy Canes
Jingle Checked Rug: 300 Bells, 50 Candy Canes
Jingle Fence: 300 Bells, 50 Candy Canes
Jingle Snow Globe: 500 Bells, 100 Candy Canes
Festive Bow Tree: 500 Bells, 100 Candy Canes
Festive Streetlight: 500 Bells, 100 Candy Canes
Festive Fireplace: 800 Bells, 300 Candy Canes
Three-Ball Snowman: 800 Bells, 300 Candy Canes

You need Candy Canes for the crafting of any of the above items.  Look at the Timed Goals to see what Rewards you obtain for each.  In many cases, you can obtain more Candy Canes by crafting one of these items to use in crafting another.  You will receive Candy Canes randomly as Bonus Rewards when you complete Animal Requests and now, when you go into the Quarry, you can receive Candy Canes instead of the usual Theme Essences.

Although this Event expired, I have kept the section to give players an idea of how these events operate.

Fishing Tourney
xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Fishing Tourney released on 15 March.  You can rent a Golden Rod for 80 Leaf Tickets.  You can use special Fishing Tourney Nets as well.  You will be given one of these by Chip but if you would like to have more, the cost is 20 Leaf Tickets for one large Throw Net.  You can obtain more from Chip when you reach specific goals.  Goals are given for total size of combined Tourney Fish in this tournament, not for individual fish sizes.

Since then, there have been a number of Fishing Tourneys.

Only special Tourney Fish are accepted by Chip and they display a sparkle in the water.  Furthermore, the Tourney is restricted to either saltwater fish at Saltwater Shores or freshwater fish.

ANIMAL LIST WITH REQUIREMENTS
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The Theme you choose initially will determine the first Animal you meet.  If you choose 'Cute', you will have Rosie.  If you choose 'Nature', you will have Apollo, although his theme actually is 'Cool'.

The first group of Animals demand only four items if you wish to host them.  If you look at the list of items for the Animals that are able to be hosted at Level 2, you will see that three of the items are the same for all.  It is only the one that differs in each case that must be crafted.  Once the requirement for the Animal is Friendship Level 3, you will find a different list in most cases for each Animal.

The special item of clothing usually is given when the Animal reaches Friendship Level 7.  You can be anywhere when this occurs and still obtain that piece of clothing from the Animal.  The special craft item, however, requires the Animal to be at your Campsite.  The Friendship Level Requirement is 15 officially although, if the Animal is at your Camp, he or she may request the item at a lower level.  Once the item is crafted, you need the Animal at your Campside to give you the special rewards that consist of a Request Ticket and a Calling Card.

Friendship Level 20 is the Level at which the Animal will give its 'pic' or portrait.

When an Animal is at your Campsite, he/she randomly will wish to talk to you and one Animal in each time period will request items from you.  If, however, you need to raise an Animal's Friendship Level to any significant degree, it is best to send that Animal away.  Animals encountered elsewhere give 3 Requests each as well as talking to you once.  When the Animal is close to Friendship Level 15, bring him or her back to the Campsite to receive the special item request.  Bring the Animal back to the Campsite at Level 20 to receive the Portrait or 'pic'.

The Actual Level at which an Animal will make that special request for an Item (thereby unlocking the special item) is given as Level 15, but I received the request from Goldie at Level 10.  It therefore is variable in truth.

Note that the ACTUAL Level at which the Animal is unlocked will vary from game to game but you will have access to the Animals who require a lower Friendship Level first.  The following therefore gives the levels at which each Animal was unlocked in my game.

Change of Animal Clothing
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

As of 15 February, there are new options with respect to Animals, including one that allows you to change an Animal's clothing, including hat and accessories.  This option is unlocked when you reach Level 4 with any Animal.  The Animal must be at the campsite for the option to be active.

Lost Items
xxxxxxxxx

Another new option, but one that I believe is linked to the campsite, is the option to find a 'Lost' Item for an Animal when he/she announces that the item was lost.  You will be given hints as to the location on the Map where you should be able to find the item.  This option is unlocked when you reach Level 8 with any Animal.

Note that a Lost Item may be found on the ground, by fishing with your rod or by shaking a tree! Return to the campsite and speak to the Animal who lost the item to close the event and receive your Reward.

Animals at your Campsite give Essences more often than those on the Map.

The Level at which you can unlock the request for the special item is rather arbitrary but occurs either at Level 10 or Level 15.  I am adding the specific Level in brackets for each of the Animals as well as their preferred Theme and Birthday.  The Theme determines the colour of the Tent each Animal pitches as well as the type of Essence he or she gives when Friendship Level increases or randomly when the Animal gives a Reward at the Campsite.

Rover and the Garden Safari
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

If you complete ALL Goals, you will see a little special Event with Rover.

Camper Options
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Go to OK Motors to customise or expand your Camper.  You first will be given the option for free colour change for only the vintage camper.  Once this is completed, you can choose other custom styles.

An announcement will be made, even if you never expanded your camper, to change to Modern Style.  You can do this for 5000 Bells.  This includes any change in colours or stripe style.

Special Paint Jobs can be done on an unexpanded camper as well.  The price depends on the style you choose.  The most recent was a Rover theme for 150 Leaf Tickets.

Expanding the interior:  As in any Animal Crossing game, this is your first incursion into DEBT.  They do the job and THEN tell you how much you owe!

1st Expansion: 10,000 Bells

All Amenities
xxxxxxxxxxxx

If you look at the requirements for each Theme Amenity and compare it with others, you will see that the system follows some basic rules.  The first Level of any Amenity takes a specific number of hours and the final upgrade usually takes the same amount of time.  The intervening Levels usually take no time at all.   It appears as well that the first Amenity in each Theme (a Tent) requires the same materials as any other Theme Tent apart from the Essence used,  Each Tent costs 3000 Coins and requires 10 of the Essence of its Theme at ANY Level and 30 Cotton.  The second Amenity always will cost 3000 Coins at any Level.  The third Amenity has a cost of 5000 Coins at any Level.

New Amenity Theme in the form of the Harmonious Theme released on 7 March.

New Amenity Theme in the form of the Hip Theme released on 30 January.

N.B.  The cost of speeding a 12 hour Amenity when first ordered is 55 Leaf Tickets.  I advise resisting this temptation.  There is a Stretch Goal that requires that you use Leaf Tickets to speed a project.  My own advice is to use this when there is very little time left on the clock, to be able to spend 1 or 2 Leaf Tickets maximum to achieve this Goal.

As of 21 August, a new Civic Theme with its own Amenities:
