Barista Mini-Game

In New Leaf, the Cafe is a Public Works Project that the Mayor must initiate.  It is not part of the Museum complex on High Street but must be situated in your village.  Once built, it cannot be demolished, so choose the location well.

When completed, you can enter at any time of the day or night to order a cup of coffee.  At first, you must sit at the counter to order.  After a few days of doing this, Brewster will give you the option to order 'take-out' coffee.  This is the first step in unlocked the mini-game.

It does not appear to matter whether or not you sit at the counter to order or order coffee 'to go'.   What does matter is frequent visits.  After a few, Brewster will tell you about the 'part-time work' option.  To initiate this, stand at the counter and you will be able to ask him if you can work for him.

I am not certain what precisely is the cause of his acceptance or rejection of your offer on any specific occasion.  At first I thought it was time of day, but that is not entirely so.  Then, I believed that failure to order coffee on a given day was significant in causing him to reject your offer the next day.    It does appear that he will be more likely to accept at an odd hour if you have worked for him a number of times.

In any case, if he rejects your offer, you can ask again later on the same day and he MAY then accept it.  It could be random, of course.

In the course of the mini-game, you will be required to fill four different orders from customers.  Ordinarily, two of the customers at least will be Animals from your own village.  Once in awhile, the third will be an Animal from another village.  It may be one you never encountered before.  The fourth and final customer always is a 'special' Character such as Tom Nook, Pelly, Slider or even Tortimer or Phineas.

What is the purpose of playing the mini-game, apart from entertainment.  Well, you always will be 'paid' in Superb Coffee Beans that can be sold at the Retail Shop or given as gifts to neighbours.  That is not the best reward, however.  As you continue to work for Brewster, he randomly will give you special items that are connected to his trade and which cannot be acquired anywhere else.

There is a set order to the spwcial items that he gives but I now believe that his decision to give or withhold on any given day is completely random.  You can fill all four orders perfectly and not be given one of his special items.  You can make a couple of mistakes and still be given one of his special items.

Despite the fact that mistakes in orders are not penalised, I have compiled a list of Characters and their 'perfect' coffee orders:
